There was a story on NPR about this just this morning. Apparently, some online retailers are getting nervous about being hit with a big tax bill or lawsuit from certain states and have already begun to collect sales tax, even when they aren't remitting what they collect to the state! Financial times and state revenues being what they are, the states are beginning to see this as a potential windfall.
The problem, at least for right now, is that federal law prohibits states from this kind of extortion. But the winds of change are in the air.
