Isn't possible that you have a frozen sewer pipe anywhere? I've had a poorly angled drain pipe freeze solid on me once ( in a mobile home of course ) Water just would not go through it, and the snake was useless. Hotwater didn't do much because the ice was so thick. If I had known the problem was ice, I could have taken a blow dryer and heated the pipe and solved the problem. Of course, this was the kitchen sink, not a toilet.

Good luck with it all...yikes! You've definetely got a problem downstairs!
