thekemp is on a distinguished road
many computers consume less energy than their older couterparts ie: 486/pentium machines, windows has numerious power saving functions, newer intel processors have power saving abilities, more and more machines have TFT monitors which use much less power than their crt brothers.

my yearly power for my 2 computers being left on 24/7 is around £50 a year, i switch my monitors off when not in use, also any devices such as printers.

with reference to tesco, i work for a similar company and the work stations here have all been replaced with newer ones that go into a deep sleep after 10 minutes of non-use.
in the uk councils are now implimenting recycling procdures for computers and charging people if they don't recycle them.
personally i dont throw any computer stuff away i recycle used cd-r and cd's and give or sell other stuff.
i have a paper bin that all paper from is re-cycled.

i do this because when i have children, i want them to enjoy this world like i have.
