Sounds like an error on the drive. I had a Maxtor do the same thing and was able to fix it with powermax! Provided you can boot to prompt with a startup disk. I don't know whether IBM has a similar program or not. What about ghost2k3 for getting your files?
I wouldn't count that hd out yet!
