I have never done that with win2k, I have done it with win98 and all it does is detect the new hardware and ask for the win98 cd and then reconfigures itself for the new hardware.

As for Win2k there is a way to replace the HAL (hardware abstraction layer) but is not easy. I suggest booting the system off the win2k CD and do a repair.
