WOL Senerio - Is It Possible To....

access my pc from afar?

Sounds studid, huh? I'm not really strong in the network aspect of computing but I find myself in a situation that requires a crash course on the WOL subject. Hopefully DVNT1 is awake .

Here's what I want to do.

I want to access my main pc on my home network in NY from the house in FL via broadband. The reason(s) for this is because our house in Florida got robbed a few days after heading back north for the summer. I just finished installing $700 worth of X10's products and have a security montoring company that will call the cops if the motion detectors \ cameras are tripped.

That is all tied into my main pc via adapters from the VRC to both my video card and usb ports. The software that comes with the products will enable me to view live streaming video of the cameras through the internet (no audio). But I need to wake my computer up in order to do this. The pc will be completly shutdown but with the power active.

The network specs:

1. Adelphia Powerlink (NY) going to a Surfboard 4200 cable modem.
2. Modem goes to a D-Link DI-704 router (router is set at factory defaults with no adjustments).
3. #1 port on the router is wired to my Linksys LNE100 TX NIC (w/ WOL).
4. I have WOL enabled in my BIOS (Soyo Dragon Platinum 333). I also have the onboard NIC enabled (it's routed to another router / cable modem that will be disconnected).

Now for the "How Do I" for an idiot .

My main desktop is a quad-boot system; Win ME, 2K Prof, XP Home, Mandrake 9. I usually use Boot Magic to boot but have it disabled to prevent any conflicts (not sure if this is needed).

'Kay, now the questions .

First, simply put I can't figure out how to wake the computer without spending the next year taking a networking course. I read up on AMD's article (briefly) that DVNT1 posted in another thread and it intimidated me a bit. I'll put the questions in the order of concern to me.

1. Do I need to bypass the router because of the built-in firewall and go directly to the NIC from the modem?
2. Do I need to disable Zone Alarm? I kinda get really queezy thinking that I won't have a hardware or software firewall running.
3. What program(s) do I need to "wake" the computer in NY? I don't want to have to use PCAnywhere on a dialup for live video feed (I use RoadRunner in Florida).
4. Setting up the router to accept a certin ip address (and reject all others) "should" wake the computer and boot to Win ME, right?
5. (For the VCN users) - Can I have the VCN client(?) enabled at startup and be able to access it from Florida to run all of the programs locally? Has anyone even ever tried this?
6. Am I making this more difficult than it needs to be?

Any sipmle links to guides for morons on WOL or anything that may apply here would also be really helpful.

TIA

Mike
