Another point that hasn't been made (least, I don't think so, anyway,) is the effect of modifications on a semi-auto handgun.
My Detonics .45 (which was made in Washington, USA) was a tad finicky out of the box. As Fingers noted, certain types of ammo can, and will, cause failure.
I had the ejection port opened up and sculpted a bit (couldn't help it

) and the interior ramp polished.
VOILA! It has NEVER failed since, even filthy dirty, in over 6 or 7,000 rounds fired. Wadcutters, semi-wads and steel ball tip loads, I would bet my life on it!
I am now of the semi-opinion that it will cheerfully discharge moose patties, as long as there's an appropriate load behind it.
One of these days I'll put up a picture of my rifle, a .250-3000 Savage bolt-action from the 1920's...the rifle itself is *pleh*, but the restock this guy did back in the '60's, is the most beautiful piece of woodworking I have ever seen, (that's why I bought it.)
