Windows XP Boot Problem

When I boot Windows XP recently, the PC stalls and the Windows XP logo with the moving bar doesn’t go away. I’ve been getting it to boot by going into safe mode and running the XP Service Pack 1 disk. This seems to get it to reboot on the next try but will not work after that. The system is an AMD CPU with a KT7A-RAID.

In the Event Viewer there was
Event Type: Error
Event Source: EventSystem
Event Category: (50)
Event ID: 4609

Description:
The COM+ Event System detected a bad return code during its internal processing. HRESULT was 8007043C from line 44 of d:\nt\com\com1x\src\events\tier1\eventsystemobj.cp p.

However, the active boot disk is C and there is no d:\nt\ directory.

Any ideas?
