I'll second Thud's point, don't worry about how much you lift, only how you are lifting it.
Also, try to work your entire body, not just your upper body. You need to balance your body.

Start out pretty easy for the first couple of weeks atleast, just doing general exercises and focusing on the major muscle groups. Once you and your body are used to it you can push harder and go for more sets for each exercise, and possibly split up your routine to work longer on fewer muscle groups on different days. But the important thing starting out is slow, focused reps, fewer sets, working the major muscle groups.

What are your goals? Fun, increase strength, increase size?
