I started smoking non-filtered Camels because they got me "high"...or at least gave me a good buzz. I was 17-ish. Eventually I got used to it and they no longer gave me a buzz. Then I switched to regular filtered Camels.

Somewhere between there and age 25 I had found myself up to a pack+ a day. Prior to that knowledge I always considered myself an "occasional" or "light" smoker. But in my mind, a pack a day was the line that crossed into being an official, die-hard smoker.

Since I wasn't too happy with myself for allowing myself to become an "official" smoker, I took a moment to make myself a promise. I promised that I would quit smoking by age 30. That goal was far enough in the future that I didn't have to worry about it for a while. Figured I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

Then, a few months prior to my 30th birthday I found myself lying around on a hot lazy Sunday afternoon, and just smoked my last cigerette. I really didn't want to go to the store to get more, plus I was short on cash (and the damn things were getting so expensive anyways). So I figured now is as good a time as any to quit. So I quit. Never bought any more. I think I bummed 2 or 3 smokes from friends in the period between that Sunday afternoon and my actually 30th birthday. But I've been smoke-free since that B-day. 4½ years now.
