try this... do start > run and type msinfo32 and press enter. in the program that comes up, go under tools, and select internet explorer detect and repair (i THINK that's what it's called in 98) and let that try to detect and repair the errors in ie5.5...

(edit) in case you still need it, the latest java vm can be found here.
