I'd highly reccomend a Giant Rainier SE...
I have the 2000 model, it's awesome for about $650 or so.(I know, out of your range, but you already got one

) For the price, you can't get a better bike, 27 speed, Deore components all around, Marzoochi Z5 air fork, disc brakes front and back....can't go wrong for the money.
