Brangwen, I've got two ideas:
1) Is it possible that you simply moved that shortcut off your desktop, or covered it up with another shortcut. Right click on your desktop and select Arrange Icons>Auto Arrange
2) Open Windows Explorer and drag "My Computer" onto the desktop again?
If it's actually gone, I'm pretty sure I can find the registry entry that you need to restore it.
