Well I had an old gateway laptop years ago that had like a smudge that wouldn't go away. I knew what it was from, a friend of mine was looking at it and thought it was so cool and thought it was a odd looking screen and took his fingernail and scratched it. turns out it wasn't cracked but the stuff under the screen is like a gel of some sort or something, I am not sure, but if you slightly press on the screen you can see the pictures distorting in that area, I tried to clean this off to but it didn't work, so I just ended up livign with it and everytime i saw it i would remember the night of it happening.
I somehow don't think its cracked but rather just underneath the surface of the screen has been scratched enough to leave a permanant mark.
I worry of my flat panel of kids doing that to it and I tell them hands OFF the monitor.
I am also told not to use chemicals on these types of monitors and only use a soft cotten cloth and water and lightly rub the monitor face down but NOT to rub hard or it can damage it.
I could be wrong as my expereince with this is limited. If your laptop is still under warrrenty why not call the company you purshaced it from and asked them if it can be repair or replaced or whatever under your warrenty.
