I came across a strange mini raid conrtoller that fits in a 3 1/2" drive bay requires no software and claims to work on any platform. it was marketed by IBM I will update more information when I find it .
The little board has three connectors one from the IDE controller and one each to the drives. the system sees one drive but the mirror system is invisible. It just has three lights on the front and a silence button for the error buzzer.
