Before I had XP, I did use Zone Alarm, which worked well too. When I upgraded to XP last year and got a cable modem, I was more concerned with security. I ran a test from a recommended website, which claimed that its test woud get through Windows Firewall but not Zone Alarm's. Well, the test found an open port with Zone Alarm, and when I changed to XP's Firewall next day, tried test again and it could not find any open ports.
So my opinion is that Windows XP Firewall is doing a good job, haven't had an attack yet. |
How do you know if you have had an attack if the Windows XP Firewall doesnt tell you when you have had one? I would NEVER use the XP integrated firewall by itself since its not as great as some stand alone firewalls such as Zone Alarm (which you can download for free) Although its always better to have the XP firewall instead of nothing, but if you are a power user who knows and want to be secure enough then the XP firewall itself is not a great thing. Wait for SP2 for XP to be released, it will include a much better and more advanced firewall for XP. But until then use Zone Alarms free version.
