Tivo DVR

Buying Guides:

Tivo is truly one of the great inventions in the past 50 years. Any product that has its customers acting like salespeople has to be good, as most Tivo users are diehard advocates that convert everyone and anyone who will listen from their old ways of watching whatever is on to controlling when and what they want to watch. Have to go to the bathroom during a show? Phone rang? Missed a bit of dialog? No problem, pause or rewind live TV with Tivo.

Pausing TV is only one of many cool feature of this great gadget. You can get a "season pass" to your favorite show, ensuring that the latest episode is recorded and waiting for you when you want to watch it. Record one show while you're watching a different show on another station. Or use the schedule guide to look ahead a few hours (or weeks) to see what's on, hit one button to record whatever you like, and leave to enjoy your day. These are just some of Tivo's features accessible at the touch of a button in an easy to use interface that anyone can operate, even kids and people that can't program the clock on their VCR.

Besides recording what you want and watching it when you want, being able to fast forward through commercials of recorded shows is a huge plus. Even if I'm home and want to watch a show that starts at 8pm, I'll often record the show and wait until it's over to watch it recorded just to fast forward through the commercials. DirecTV satellite receivers with integrated Tivo DVR's make recording programs more convenient than ever. Many of these units include dual tuners to receive two channels at once. This means that you can watch one channel while another is recording, or record two channels at once while playing back a Tivo recorded show or when you're not watching TV. Having everything integrated into one unit saves space, too.

Some Tivo units even include a built-in DVD burner, enabling you can save your Tivo recordings to a DVD to take on the road, though these devices are obviously a bit pricey.

Before you buy, be sure to look around for rebates and incentives for new Tivo owners. Incentives can often save you hundreds of dollars - when I got my DirecTV Tivo unit a couple years ago, it was totally free after rebate.

Even if you don't own a VCR or know how to program one, take the leap and get a Tivo if you're at all into watching TV at all. It will completely empower you to control when and how you watch TV and you'll never miss your favorite shows, or any of life's important moments either. Be aware that there is a monthly fee (or a larger one time fee) to use the Tivo service.
